5 What to Wear Tips for Senior Portraits in a Mountain Town | Truckee & Lake Tahoe Senior Photography
Your senior year is a big deal, and your senior portraits should feel like YOU! Here's what to wear for your senior session in Truckee, Lake Tahoe, and the surrounding mountains.
First things first: there are no rules when it comes to senior portraits! Your photos should reflect your personality, your style, and this exciting chapter of your life. Whether you're a jeans-and-sneakers kind of person, love getting dressed up, or want to rock your favorite vintage band tee, I'm here for it.
Living in a mountain town like Truckee means we have SO many incredible backdrops for senior portraits. Think mountain views, tall pine trees, lakeside trails, colorful fall leaves, and even a little downtown Truckee charm.
The trick? Choosing outfits that look great in the mountains, feel comfortable, and let your personality shine.
Here are my favorite tips to help you plan your senior portrait outfits without stressing over your closet for the next three weeks.
1. Bring 2–3 Outfits That Show Different Sides of YOU
I always recommend bringing a few different looks to your session. This gives us variety in your gallery without making you feel like you need to pack your entire bedroom.
Think about choosing outfits from these categories:
Casual everyday look: Your favorite jeans, a cute top, sneakers, or a flannel. Something you would actually wear hanging out with friends.
Dress it up a little: A flowy dress, a nice button-down, a skirt, or a blazer. Something that feels a little more polished but still like you.
Your personality outfit: A varsity jacket, favorite sports jersey, band tee, letterman jacket, cowboy boots, or something that shows off your hobbies and interests.
And please, don't feel like you have to wear something just because you think it's what senior portraits are supposed to look like. If you never wear dresses, you don't need to suddenly show up in one. If you love dressing up, let's absolutely do that!
The goal is to have a gallery that feels like YOU, not someone else's Pinterest board.
2. Think Mountain Town Colors
Truckee and Tahoe have a pretty amazing natural color palette. We've got deep green pine trees, golden grasses, blue skies, mountain lakes, and beautiful rocky landscapes.
The good news? You don't have to overthink your colors. Just consider the location and season when picking your outfits.
Colors I love for mountain senior portraits:
Earthy tones: rust, olive green, mustard, chocolate brown, and warm neutrals.
Classic colors: navy, cream, black, denim, and white.
Pops of color: burgundy, cobalt blue, forest green, or your favorite bright color.
Want to wear hot pink? DO IT. Love an all-black outfit? Let's make it happen.
My biggest tip is to choose colors that complement the surroundings without blending in completely. For example, if we're photographing you in a field of golden grass, wearing a similar shade of tan might make you disappear into the background.
And don't forget: the colors you love and feel confident wearing are always going to photograph better than something you don't feel like yourself in.
3. Accessories & Furry Friends That Make It Personal!
Accessories are a great way to make your senior portraits feel less like a formal photo shoot and more like an afternoon hanging out and having fun.
Think about bringing something that represents YOU.
A few ideas:
Your beloved pet!
Your favorite hat, beanie, or sunglasses.
Jewelry you wear every day.
A skateboard, guitar, sports equipment, or musical instrument.
Your letterman jacket, team jersey, or college sweatshirt.
A book, camera, or something connected to your favorite hobby.
Are you a skier, snowboarder, mountain biker, artist, or musician? Let's incorporate that into your session!
You don't need to bring props just for the sake of having props. But if something is a big part of your life, let's find a fun way to include it.
These little personal touches often become the photos your family loves most because they capture who you are right now.
4. What About Hair, Makeup & Grooming?
My biggest advice is to keep it YOU.
If you wear makeup every day and want to get a little more dressed up, go for it. If you prefer a natural look, that's great too.
A few things to keep in mind:
Try not to experiment with a completely new hairstyle the day before your session.
Bring a brush, hair ties, or any products you might need for touch-ups.
If you're getting professional hair or makeup done, choose a look that still feels like you.
Keep a little lip balm or powder handy if you like having it for touch-ups.
And guys, this applies to you, too! Get a haircut a few days before your session if that's your usual routine, and bring whatever you need to feel put together.
We want you feeling comfortable and confident, not worrying about every little hair.
5. The Most Important Tip: Wear Something You Feel Good In!
I know, I know. It sounds obvious, but it's worth repeating.
Your senior portraits are about celebrating YOU and this exciting time in your life. You don't need a brand-new wardrobe, expensive clothes, or the perfect outfit from a trendy store.
Some of my favorite senior portraits come from simple outfits that let someone's personality shine.
If you feel good in it, can move comfortably, and look at yourself in the mirror and think, "Yep, that's me!" — we're off to a great start.
