Top 5 Easy Ways to Coordinate for Family Photos | Lifestyle family photography by Kelli Price Photography

As a Lake Tahoe family photographer, '“What should I wear?” is the #1 question I’m asked. I get it, it’s tough to know what will look the best for your entire family. I put together a few of my favorite coordinated families from my 2021 Mini Sessions.

Tip #1 - Select the outfit for the pickiest dresser (assuming that’s you if you are reading this) and then build the other outfits! Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to plan. Or go shopping if need to….I give you permission!

Tip #2 - LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!! Consider the location. This can vary by time of the year, snow, leaves changing etc.! Keep scrolling to view examples by LOCATION of where I typically offer photo sessions (East coast to West coast baby!)

  1. Flannel Shirts

  2. Vests

  3. Jean shirts & jackets

  4. Beige & lighter colors with a pop of color

  5. Layer with fun accessories or jackets

At the end of the day, wear what YOU feel best in and shows your families personalities. There are a variety of examples in this post. What’s your favorite outfit?

Top 5 Easy Ways to Coordinate

Flannels

Flannel shirts (or “blanket shirts” I’m seeing now….eye roll) are a fun & easy way to coordinate and “pop”…perfect for a family of boys!

vests

Furry vests, comfy vests etc. This makes it easy to look stylish and still be warm!

jean shirts & jackets

Another option to stay warm and coordinate with your family

Beige & lighter colors with a pop of color

This is just my personal preference, but I love the lighter colors which make the subjects pop in the photos, no matter the location!

Layer with fun accessories or jackets

It will most likely be chilly during your fall session and you want to keep the little ones cozy & happy during the photo shoot. So, don’t be afraid to layer up or add a hat!

Outfit inspiration based on location!

Atlanta

I’ve been missing the fall foliage the past few years when I go back East. So it’s safe to say that it will mostly be green with the beginning of fall foliage. Lighter colors, like gray & beige and a pop of jewel colors seems to be a popular choice for ATL! And flannels!

Reno

Reno is typically dryer and more brown/yellow. So, a good rule of thumb is to avoid yellow & brown attire. Darker jewel colors can pop against the lighter background.

Truckee

Like Reno, Truckee can also have a lot of brown/yellow…so avoid those colors if you will be in a field of dry grass (ask me if you aren’t sure!). Jewel colors and flannels are always a winner!

Truckee with snow!

If you are visiting Lake Tahoe, a snow photo shoot is the perfect Lake Tahoe family activity! It may be a little chillier, but the snow is really beautiful in photos! This would be the ONLY time I would recommend wearing less lighter colors so you don’t blend with the background.
